SBVK

Santa Barbara is a magical place. The city is nestled into a small chunk of land between the Santa Barbara channel and the Santa Ynez mountains and you can go from sea level to over 1000 meters in a very short distance. La Cumbre Peak, the highest mountain you see when you look up from Santa Barbara, provides the best view in Santa Barbara. I had this idea of putting a Vertical Kilometer race up La Cumbre stuck in my head.

In March of 2020, the world shut down. Ironically event cancelations turned Santa Barbara VK into a reality.

Using an altimeter app on my phone I walked down Tunnel Road until I was 1000 meters lower than La Cumbre Peak. I found the closest intersection to that point and made that the start line. The course was simple enough - run up Tunnel Road until you get to Tunnel Trail, take that to the road at the top (Camino Cielo), turn left keep going up-hill until you’re at La Cumbre Peak. I made a simple website and Instagram account and mapped out the course on Strava. With little prodding, some friends and their friends went and did the race!
